“Hiwaga Sa Pulong Pasig”

Pedro Faustino

“Hiwaga Sa Pulong Pasig” (translated in English as “Mystery Of Pasig Island) was a movie released from the Philippines in 1973. The said movie can be categorized as in the genre of drama, love story and fantasy. It was shown first in selected Philippine cinemas and was later shown in Philippine television channels (this was before the advent of cable television) as an afternoon feature presentation.

The cast of characters were Robert Arevalo, Boots Anson Roa, Rodolfo “Boy” Garcia, Eva Darren, Roderick Paulate and Pedro Faustino among others. Special appearances were made by Divina Valencia, Yoyoy Villame and Mary Walter.

The movie was directed by Robert Arevalo whose real birth name is Robert Francisco Ylagan who died last August 10, 2023 at the age of 85.

A fisherman (Arevalo) who lives in a village near the sea is a very industrious person. He loves his work very much because it provides food and other needed items in their home. He has a younger brother (Paulate) who wants to emulate the good deeds of his older brother.

The fisherman has a girl friend (Darren) who lives in their village and is the one minding the sari-sari store owned by her parents. However, he has a persistent suitor (Garcia) who is the son of a wealthy and influential man.

When the fisherman defended his girl friend from the persistent advances of the suitor one day in the store, a fight broke out. Even if the guilty one was the suitor (who was then together with his friends), the parents of the fisherman’s girl friend sided with the suitor. To add insult to injury, they told the fisherman to stop seeing their daughter.

To prove that he is a worthy man for his girl friend, he worked very hard as a fisherman. He does not waste his time and is always at the sea whether with a group of fellow fisherman or alone.

In one of his days alone at the sea, his fishing boat hit something hard, but he could not see it. It turned out to be an island called “Pulong Pasig”. There he met a lady (Anson Roa) whom he later fell in love with. It was presented later in the movie that the physical appearances of the people who live in the island do not change even if they are of old age already.

His stay there for a few days turned out to be equivalent to decades. He came from the 1920’s and returned to their village which now looks different in the 1970’s. He was reminded by the island’s leader (Walter) that when he come back to his place of origin it would be a different time already.

In this said time, his parents would be dead already. His younger brother is now an old and wealthy man (Faustino) who became rich because a chest filled with expensive pearls appeared suddenly in their nipa hut one day. This was confirmed by him when he did return to his world.

The brothers were surprised and shocked to see each other after so many years. His brother is already old while his physical appearance did not change. His brother and his parents thought he was already dead and not missing. His sweet heart married the persistent suitor whom her parents are in favor of because she had no choice because he had disappeared without a trace.

He was very glad to see his brother again after so many years, but he encountered situations which is telling him that he can not adjust to the time line in which he returned to after visiting the mysterious island. These were the following:

  • He thought that the person he saw one day while walking at the beach was his rival suitor who is still alive. Actually, that person was the son of his rival who is the spitting image of his father. He was jamming with a group led by a singer (Villame) when he saw them. He almost killed him by strangling because he thought he was the rival. The singer told him that it was impossible because the father was already dead and was shocked by his statement because of his physical appearance.
  • His brother tried to match him with a beautiful lady (Valencia) who was turned off with him when he commented about her outfit (wearing shorts) and told her that she might be arrested by the police. In the time he came from, ladies were very conservative in their outfit and did not wear shorts in public.
  • His brother wanted him to have a good time one evening and he brought him to a night club where liquors are served and many young people are regular customers. He drank too much and because of this, he became the laughing stock of the young customers because he became very wild in his actions and the manners of his speaking became rowdy. He got a heavy hang over this and woke up the following morning with a head ache.

The last situation made him to think over and felt that he does not belong to the time line he had returned. He told this to his brother and after asking him for a time to be alone, he decided that he will return to the island. He bade good bye to his brother whom he will no longer see.

He got a fishing boat for his journey and once again found the island. Upon arrival there, he saw Anson Roa’s character and told her that he will stay with her for good. He did stay there but not after passing the challenge given to him by Walter’s character.

The challenge was facing and defeating the “Mga Taong Dilim” (“Men Of The Dark”) who are very strong. The abrupt change of his physical appearance (which showed his real old age) almost became an obstacle to hurdle the challenge, but his great and pure love overcame this said obstacle. The fisherman feels that this is the world where he now belongs.

“ASEDILLO”: FPJ As A Teacher-Turned-Revolutionary

The late Filipino actor Fernando Poe, Jr. (FPJ) played the role of a public school teacher-turned-revolutionary in “ASEDILLO”, a film which was based on the life of the title character which was released from the Philippines in 1971.

The said film was produced by FPJ Productions, a movie outfit owned by the late FPJ. Because of this feature-length film presentation, Ronnie (FPJ’s real nickname) became well known as a fine Filipino actor by playing the role of protector of the oppressed and the poor.

The film was directed by Celso Ad Castillo and FPJ got his 2nd Famas Best Actor Award for playing the role of Teodoro “Dodo” Asedillo. According to the late FPJ’s widow, the late Susan Roces, who is an actress (movies and television) from the Philippines, the film was the late actor’s favorite.

The real Asedillo was mentioned in an article (“TITSER: Ang Pinakadakilang Propesyon” translated in the English language as “TEACHER: The Most Noble Profession”) written by Wilson Lee Flores in his column entitled “Kuwentong Panadero” in “Pilipino Star Ngayon”, a tabloid newspaper in the Philippines, on September 28, 2018.

Asedillo was described as a valiant teacher who was born in July, 1883 at Longos (now called Kalayaan) in the province of Laguna. He became a legend in Eastern Laguna and Quezon. From 1910 to 1921, he served as a teacher in the public elementary school of Longos. He became a revolutionary during the time of the colonial Americans.

The beginning of his revolutionary ways was his defiance of the policy of the Americans that the English language should be used as a medium of instruction. He chose to use the Filipino language instead of the English language.

He did not use also the books that were written by foreign authors. Because of this, he was charged with insubordination or not following the order of the Department of Public Instructions in 1923 and he was expelled from the teaching profession.

In the film, FPJ as Asedillo told openly to the education officials what he observed about the learning difficulties encountered by his pupils. He was removed from his teaching position and was assigned as the chief of police in a town in Laguna.

However, he was later framed-up for robbery of the funds being kept in the town’s treasury. One of those involved in implicating him was the town mayor. In those days, the town mayor was called as the municipal president.

As a revolutionary, he became a legend and was called as “Terror Of Sierra Madre”. His men move without restrictions or free in the provinces of Laguna and Tayabas (now known as Quezon and Aurora) in the Southern Luzon Region. He was like Robin Hood who steals from the rich and gives to the poor.

In the film, FPJ as Asedillo, the revolutionary, gained followers for his cause. Before he assumed the position of the chief of police, he was approached by his cousin to join them in the labor movement they are establishing. He declined.

When he became a revolutionary, he and his men encountered problems and obstacles such as winning the hearts and minds of the people, health and sanitary concerns, weather in their mountain hideouts, wrong men recruited for their cause (illustrated by the character played by Paquito Diaz) and their several battles against the authorities.

He was killed in an encounter in December 31, 1935 against the combined forces of the Philippine Constabulary (PC) and the local police in Maladiangaw Falls, Sampalok, Tayabas (now Quezon) after years of fighting for his cause. The American media, through newspaper reports, portrayed him as a bandit, but the valiant public school teacher Teodoro Asedillo was a true great hero from the Philippines.

In the film, it was implied that Asedillo was killed when the PC and local police surrounded his hut and was trapped. His last fight was futile because he was not able to use his gun and tried to make a last stand by the use of a hunting knife.

He refused to surrender until the end. His dead body was paraded around the town in the form of crucifixion. But this was not a close-up shot. The last scene of the movie showed FPJ as Asedillo standing and looking the horizon from his mountain hideout.

Happier Days Ahead To All Of Us!

“ABNKKBSNPLAko?!”

The title of the subject movie of our feature post refers to the phonetics “Aba, nakakabasa na pala ako?!” in the Filipino language. It means “Wow, I can already read now?!” in the English language.

The movie was released first in the cinemas in the Philippines in the Year 2014 by a movie outfit called Viva Films, Inc. with the cooperation of MVP Entertainment. This was later shown in the country’s cable television channel called PBO (Pilipino Box Office) which features Philippine movies.

The genre of the said movie can be categorized as a combination of comedy, drama, love story, advocacy, anecdotal and social commentary.

The cast of characters were Jericho Rosales, Meg Imperial, Vandolph Quizon, Andi Eigenmann, Bing Pimentel, Julio Diaz, Evelyn Vargas, Giselle Sanchez and Gino Padilla among others.

The movie, which was based on the best-selling book (Year 2001) by Bob Ong, was directed by Mark Meily.

Roberto “Bob” Ong (Rosales) serves as the narrator of the movie and there were scenes he breaks the fourth wall by way of telling the audience of certain information which proved to be helpful and entertaining as well. This is Roberto’s story told by way of flash backs during his school years (elementary, high school and college) and working years as a high school teacher in a computer subject.

He teaches at his high school alma mater where one of his co-teachers is Portia (Imperial), his friend since the elementary years. She used to have a crush on him during those years. However, he told her that they could only be friends.

From that day on, she took a liking on fellow girls. They have a friend since childhood named Ulo (Quizon) who is also their classmate from elementary to high school. The three went to college later, but Ulo dropped out to become a factory worker. If Roberto did not enroll again to study in college and continued with his being a drop-out, he would not have become a teacher.

The three friends learned of a forthcoming high school reunion and they are asking each other if they will attend. Roberto does not want to but he learned from the school’s principal (Vargas) that the faculty must have a 100% attendance. So he has no choice but to attend it.

Portia, his fellow teacher, even if she has reservations, will attend it also. She told Roberto that she did not accept their classmates’ invitation to join their social media network because she might feel embarrass and frustrated to the updates they will post online. Roberto’s concern is that he feels not successful because he thinks that his classmates are more successful than him if they shared stories with each other come reunion time.

When he talked with Ulo later, the latter told him that he must not think like that and don’t belittle his work as a teacher. Teaching is a noble profession says Ulo. Ulo told Roberto that the former is very proud of his job as a factory worker and he will not tell false stories to his classmates to impress them.

The major concern of Roberto about the reunion is seeing again his “Special Someone” (Eigenmann) whom he has a relationship which can not be labeled and is “off and on” during his fourth year high school days and his early college days.

As the day of their high school reunion approaches, Roberto looks back at the following memories of his elementary, high school and college days and his early days of working as a high school teacher:

ELEMENTARY

  • He learned how to read by starting with simple words to complex words.
  • He became a teacher’s (Sanchez) pet which includes buying a dozen nutribun (bread sold in the canteens of public schools) for her by falling in a very long line of pupils buying the same food. The long line happened because the two lady vendors are gossiping about show business matters instead of attending to their tasks. When his turn came, it was very late and the classes were already dismissed. The teacher who ordered him to buy left already.
  • He became also same teacher’s “enemy number one” when he committed a lapse that was caused by the same teacher.
  • Since his seat was the very last, he ate almost nothing during the lunch break.
  • Roberto’s friendship with Portia and Ulo began when the three of them were the only ones left in the school premises because their respective parents/guardian were not able to pick them up after class. They were caught in a storm and they went home by wading through the flooded areas.
  • Roberto and Portia were assigned team mates in a practical arts subject. They agreed to meet in a mall with their assigned respective materials for a project. They will do the said project in the food court of the mall with tables which have adequate space as a working area. Before they begin the project, Portia treat Roberto to a movie being shown in the mall to relax first.
  • The timeline of the movie which Roberto and Portia watched was in February 1984. The title: “Bagets” which was produced and released by Viva Films, Inc. also.
  • Roberto also narrated the games played by the elementary students during that period which became part and parcel of the school culture of the Philippines.

HIGH SCHOOL

  • Roberto, Portia and Ulo are still friends who found time to cut classes and go out from the school premises by using the fire escape as a route. They escape from school because they will watch the movie that is currently shown at the mall.
  • In third year high school classes in the Philippines, the required reading for the Filipino subject is the novel “Noli Me Tangere” written by Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. The class where the three friends belong had a very strict teacher who required her students to make a quarterly summary of the chapters of the novel to be written in their respective notebooks. Since most of them are lazy to do it, the teacher punished them by asking them to submit their notebooks at that moment. They crammed and put their notebooks at the teacher’s desk. When the teacher saw these, she returned these to them. The students all hard headed returned these to the teacher’s desk again. The teacher showed her authority by throwing all their notebooks from the window of the class room  which is located in the upper floor to the school grounds below.
  • Roberto went down to retrieve his notebook. He saw a beautiful lady student (Eigenmann) for the first time whom he called “Special Someone” from then on. She was the one who picked up his notebook and gave it to him. He learned later that she was the new student who transferred to their school.
  • Feeling love for the first time, he wrote several love letters which he did not sign. One time, his mother (Pimentel), who works as a dressmaker to augment the family income to help her OFW husband (Diaz), was at home and made a sneak peek to the love letter he is composing for the young lady.
  • He sends the love letters by inserting them inside the young lady’s notebook or inside the book she is using while studying at the library. At first, she did not know her mysterious admirer. But later, using her instinct she found out his identity.
  • He was shocked to find out from Ulo and himself that the apple of his eye has a boyfriend who is their fellow student in the same school. He decided to love her from a distance.
  • He got the surprise of his life when she approached him one day and invited him to be her date for the Junior Senior Prom. He accepted it after she told him that she and her boyfriend broke up. He thought that he would be the happiest young man come the prom. However, upon their arrival at the school premises, she excused herself from him. She went to her boyfriend, whom she broke up, to have a heart to heart conversation. He saw this and he was very disappointed.
  • His graduation day from high school together with his friends and his classmates was a major milestone for his life as a student. Whether good or bad, the memories of high school life will always be precious to remember as the years go by. Graduating from high school is just only the beginning.

COLLEGE

  • Roberto, Portia and Ulo looked for prospect colleges and universities where they will pursue their respective tertiary educations. Their first stop was the University of the East (UE), Recto, Manila Campus. The security guard there told them that that they will start accepting enrollment on a certain date and it is not yet the date of enrollment. When they were on a jeepney already, they asked each other what the date is on that day, it is the date mentioned by the guard who told them that it is not yet the time to enroll.
  • Their next stop was the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Sta. Mesa, Manila, Campus where personnel from its concerned offices treated them like pingpong balls being hit by its players. Finger pointing at its worst situation.
  • Portia decided to pursue education in a university where Roberto and Ulo also enrolled but in different courses. Roberto wants to take Computer Science but it is not offered by the university. Computer Programming is being offered and Roberto took the entrance examination after the proctor asked him if he is sure that it is the course he wants. Ulo dropped out from studying and found work as a factory worker.
  • Although Roberto passed the examination, he realized the hard part of finishing and passing his chosen course. He lied to his mother that he is doing well in college. The truth was he was having a hard time adjusting with his classmates in terms of pacing in studying. He did not submit his assignments, projects, reports and related course requirements in time. He was always late in coming to classes. The quality of his outputs to his classes was not good. One of his professors (Padilla) called his attention to this and reminded him of the possible scenarios that may happen.
  • His mother suggested to him transfer to another school which he did. But, Roberto is very bored with studying. He leaves home daily supposedly to go to school. But he did not. He spent the whole day playing computer games in an arcade. He did this for about two months.
  • Bothered by his conscience on his not going to school to study, he wrote a letter to his parents and apologized for what he did. He will stop studying for the meantime to think matters out. But this would not be for a long time since her mother believes that he can still finish studying in college.
  • The short break did good for Roberto because when he resumed his studies he felt refreshed and re-charged. He enrolled in a computer course which is for two years only, but he is very happy and very satisfied in finishing the course. He did not waste his time anymore and focused on his studies with full concentration.
  • The said computer course he had finished gave him the major advantage to get a job as a high school teacher in his high school alma mater in a computer subject.

In his early days of working as a high school teacher of a computer subject, he made a blunder (a funny one) during his first day of teaching. He reported to a wrong classroom  which are not his students. He told them that he will see them next week.

He later arrived at his real class in the right classroom. But the students thought he is their classmate because he is very young looking. They did not give attention to him at first, but when he started calling their names, they gave him their full and serious attention.

When he reported to the office of the high school principal and she asked him how was his first day of teaching, he said it was good. The principal told him that the school needs full time teachers like him to guide their students. He was very glad with this latest development which turned out to be a major blessing for him.

After several years, Roberto saw his “Special Someone” again. He first saw her in a coffee shop which Portia went and asked him to meet her there. He was surprised to see his lady love there and told Portia why she did not tell him that she is with her.

There, he learned that she is still single because she is studying law and she is working with law firms one after another to gain experience in the legal profession. He told her that he works as a teacher in their high school alma mater. He told her that he had relationships but only for a short time.

The next time he saw her was during the meeting before their high school reunion where the theme was about the 80s. By that time, he learned that she is single, but she is seeing someone who happens to be her boyfriend during their high school days and is engaged to him already. She told him that some day he will find his true love.

The third time he saw her was during the reunion proper where he confirmed the relationship she has with her high school sweetheart. What made his heart ache more painful was when the boyfriend (who is a braggart par excellence) told him that they will be married at a later time. The proposed venue is very far that he is not sure whether he and her fiancee will invite Roberto to their wedding.

Roberto almost lost his interest in celebrating the high school reunion. He left the venue but not the school premises. He just sit in a bench to reflect what happened. Portia saw him and she called immediately Ulo so that he can lighten Roberto’s burden. Ulo at the last minute backed out to attend the reunion, but he changed his mind because of the situation. He did not change his exercise outfit and went to the venue.

The three friends were reunited again and they celebrated the event by joining a group dance with their classmates to the sound of the song of Martin Nievera. Then they saw “Special Someone” leaving the venue.

She found out that her fiancee is still a two timer when she saw him with a female high school classmate doing what was supposed to be done in a motel. Roberto followed her and saw her at the bench where he sat earlier. Then and there, the two talked again to each other and they will continue their romantic chapter they had after several years after that very happy evening.

“Ninja Kids”

“Ninja Kids” was a feature-length film which was released from the Philippines in 1986.

The said feature-length film was produced by Viva Films, Inc., a movie production company which is headed by Vic “Boss Vic” Del Rosario, Jr.

The film, which was directed by Pablo Santiago, can be categorized in the genre of action, martial arts (ninjas), adventure, fantasy and comedy combination.

The lead title characters of the film were played by JC Bonnin, Francis Magalona, Ramon Christopher, Keno, Ricky Rivero (who later became a director and continued with his acting career in his later years until he died last July 16, 2023), Dennis Da Silva and Herbert Bautista.

Lea Salonga, Yani De Veyra and Mia Prats played the roles of the love interests.

Elizabeth Oropesa played the main villain, an evil sorceress named “Lotus”.

Ernie Ortega played “The Master” the main nemesis of the main villain.

Protacio Dee, Lito Garcia, Victor Bravo and Manjo Del Mundo were the other veteran cast members who played their respective roles in the said film.

Guest roles were played by Danny Rojo, Mely Tagasa, Paquito Diaz, Max Alvarado, Bomber Moran and Joaquin Fajardo among others.

The theme song of the film was entitled “You’ve Got The Power” which was performed by Randy Santiago (who was also one of the film’s assistant directors of his father Pablo), Gino Padilla and Juan Miguel Salvador. The three male singers came from their respective show business clans of the Philippines.

The main villain attempts to retrieve an ancient samurai sword (“Katana”) which possesses great power from a martial arts master named “Naguchi”. Naguchi (Dee) is also a businessman. His corporate office was raided by a man who works for Lotus (Rojo) and got a samurai sword which he thought was the one wanted by her. However, when she tested it for durability, it was broken. It passed for sharpness earlier. It turned out it was a fake and she killed personally Rojo’s character.

Naguchi is keeping the sword, which was stolen, for several years. The raid or break out at his office was reported by his right hand man, body guard and personal driver (Garcia) to him. His daughters (Salonga and Pratts) whom he is training personally for martial arts are wondering why his father is keeping the samurai sword and treat the sword as very important.

A group of friends (Bonnin, Magalona, Ramon Christopher, Keno, Rivero, Da Silva and Bautista) plan their own camping trip to follow an all-girl class who are on a summer camping trip (religious retreat) with their strict teacher played by Tagasa.

Several misadventures, comedy of errors and slip-ups were experienced by the boys. They sneaked inside the retreat site and wore ladies’ clothes so that they can mingle with the girls. However, they were caught red handed by the teacher in the bonfire because she did not know their faces from the other girls. They were thrown out from the site at once.

While the boys were sleeping in the tent they brought, a snake crawled on them. The boys were very persistent. They went to the site again using their bicycles which distracted the girls from their activities. They were thrown out again from the site. The teacher went to the site where the boys held their camp and punched the wheels of their vehicle. This was done while they were sleeping.

Because of these situations, the friends are stranded in the mountains. They became lost and to find their way again, they wore their clothes backward. It did not work because they entered another dimension or portal. Instead, they found an isolated cave where an old martial arts master (Ortega) lives. Earlier, they ate fruits from trees that they saw there.

The master did not allow the boys to leave the cave. He told them that he needs a favor from them before they do it. He let them stay in his cave and fed them. His expertise includes ninjutsu.

The boys were selected to become ninjas who underwent rigid trainings on this martial arts. The trainings were in the form of running in obstacle courses, climbing like the ninjas, swordsmanship using the samurai, weight trainings by carrying logs, balancing their bodies over the water (river) karate kid style, acrobatic stunts, tumbling and physical exercises. They were presented as hilarious scenes.

The master gave them an actual test. They were sent to a cave with boiling water and burning rocks to get a blue jar. They got it which contains necklaces or pendants which serve as amulets for them to transform into “White Ninjas”. They were able to escape from a giant they met before returning to the cave of their master.

Their transformation into ninjas complete with outfit, samurai sword and assorted weapons for each of them was witnessed by them personally and their master. Before they leave, the master reminded them of their mission to retrieve the samurai sword he owns and only a ninja can stop a ninja.

The first actual test of their transformation into ninjas with powers were validated when they met a tribe of headhunters who want to kill them. They defeated and scared them away.

When they came home, they met the girls again at a fast food joint called “Jollibee”. Unfortunately, their rival suitors from another group of boys arrived there and just like in a previous scene in a park, they harassed them again.

A fight broke out between the two groups of boys. The fight disrupted Bautista’s character romantic interest in Salonga’s character. He wants to meet her. Rivero’s character in turn got interested in Pratt’s character. They left the place when the fight happened with Garcia’s character. Bautista learned the residence where the sisters live and some information from one of the male crew of the fast food by bribing him step by step.

The boys transformed into ninjas again when they fought a group of hostage takers (Diaz, Alvarado, Moran and Fajardo) of a family. They turned them over to the policemen who arrived at the scene to negotiate and to ask them to surrender to them. The ninjas were photographed by a newspaper broadsheet which made the headline. Lotus learned the news about them and told her men that she has black ninjas at their side.

The boys found the residence of the sisters. Bautista and Rivero found a way to meet their prospects when the first boy pretended to be hit by their family car on the road and falling into a ditch or manhole. The sisters brought them into their home and met their father.

One day on orders of Lotus, Naguchi was abducted by Bravo, Del Mundo and their colleagues while on his way to his office with Garcia’s character.

The boys learned about the abduction and went to Naguchi’s home to help his daughters. Salonga’s character answered the telephone call from Lotus. The latter ordered the former to bring the samurai sword in her father’s custody to Lotus so that the sisters can see their father alive.

The abduction turned out to be easy because Garcia’s character is the traitor who betrayed his employer. This was learned by the sisters when they brought the sword to the main villain’s hideout.

The “Ninja Kids” attacked the hideout and faced the private army of Lotus whose outfit consists of blue long sleeves, a pair of white pants and red beret. When the private army members were defeated, Lotus showed her black magic powers by making the black ninjas appeared to fight the white ninjas. The white ninjas defeated their black counterparts.

Naguchi and her daughters fought the two fat henchmen of Lotus who are guarding them. Later, Noguchi fought the traitor who betrayed them one on one until the latter dies. Using her black magic powers again, Lotus transformed into a red ninja to fight the white ninjas. The Ninja Kids, using teamwork and the martial arts skills they learned from their master. defeated and killed Lotus using the samurai sword (which she wanted very much) with great powers against her.

They retrieved the sword which they turned over to their master who is the real owner of it. He thanked the boys for this and he vanished from their sights.

The film ends with the boys meeting the giant they faced earlier. They tried to transform into ninjas again, but this time it failed because the amulets lost their powers because their mission is now over. The only option was to run away from the giant.

The subject film can be described as “Bagets” action movie because of the appearance of its actors in the said youth oriented movies: Bautista, Bonnin, Magalona and Ramon Christopher. The four and Rivero (a Salvador) came from their respective show business clans. This was Keno’s only film.
