“Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood?”

newspaper vendor imagestricycle imagessecurity guard indexThe song “People In Your Neighborhood” in the Sesame Street TV Series is one of its segments wherein children of school age learn about the different jobs the people have. Although the TV series is in the American setting, this and the particular segment is applicable globally. The song begins with the lyrics: “Who are the people in your neighborhood?” The different tasks are describe by the different jobs the people have. This shows that people should be proud of the job they have because the different jobs and the different people help each other. They are the people you meet when you buy something in the neighborhood, while going to work, while going home or many other situations. In the Philippines, here are some of them:

  • The Newspaper Vendors: Every morning, most people want to read the latest news from various daily broadsheets and tabloids before, during or after breakfast. The newspaper vendors either deliver them to your homes or we buy them direct from their news stands. They are part of our daily lives because they disseminate information that we can read either for leisure or for study. They also sell magazines like Liwayway which up to now is part of the Philippine society.
  • The Pedicab/Trycycle Drivers: Whether going to work, school, grocery, church and other places within the neighborhood, they are there. Pupils and students who are attending classes at various schools make use of their services every day. Some of them may be our former classmates, present neighbors in the streets where we live or former law enforcers who in their younger days were one who assisted the school guards in protecting its premises.
  • The Security Guards (in a drug store or any other establishments): We meet them when we buy medicines and/or grocery items in the said establishment or other establishments in which they provide protection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or other schedules. We were able to talk to them for a few minutes and we will learn that their tasks entail major responsibilities. Some of them came from the provinces to work in the different cities in order to provide their respective families food, clothings and other necessities. Some of them can not go home to their provinces during Christmas Days because of the tight schedules they have. Thus, if they have an opportunity to have a vacation once in a while, it is a big thing for them.

This blogger suggests that students in film making or people who are current filmmakers to take a a look at them as possible sources of story line or subjects of their film projects so that dignity of work can be advocated all the time. These may be in the form of independent movies where creativity in telling stories can be maximized.

This blogger may have overlooked also some other people in our neighborhoods, but he welcomes his readers to share their thoughts on them. He limited his above choices to those he thinks that are good role models for all of us, regardless of age and economic status.
